Media Spotlights
Collective Minds is honoured to present the globally celebrated jazz saxophonist and composer, Kamasi Washington, at the Capitol Theatre Singapore on Thursday, 5th June 2025. After a sold-out show in 2018, Kamasi makes his highly anticipated return to Singapore, marking the second stop on his Asia tour. A genre-transcending multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader, Kamasi has redefined the boundaries of modern jazz—fusing tradition with elements of soul, hip-hop, classical, and global sounds. He first rose to global prominence through his work on Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015, and later contributed to Lamar’s DAMN, with his saxophone performance on the track "HUMBLE" in 2017. Kamasi then followed with his own critically acclaimed 3-hour opus The Epic, and brought his expansive sound to the mainstream with his score for Netflix’s Becoming, the documentary on Michelle Obama. His contributions to Becoming earned him a 2021 Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and an Emmy nomination in 2020 for Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score). In addition, Kamasi was nominated for a 2022 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for Dinner Party: Dessert. Bringing his Fearless Movement tour to Singapore, Kamasi Washington will take the stage with his formidable 8-piece band, continuing to reshape contemporary music with bold experimentation and cultural resonance.
ABOUT FEARLESS MOVEMENT
Washington’s latest album, Fearless Movement, marks a bold new direction for the renowned saxophonist and composer. Described as his “dance album,” Washington explores dance as a metaphor for movement and expression, pushing the boundaries of jazz into a realm of rhythm and bodily connection. Unlike his previous works, which delved into cosmic and existential themes, Fearless Movement focuses on the earthly, everyday experience, influenced by the birth of his daughter and a heightened awareness of both his mortality and immortality.
The album features collaborations with a diverse group of artists, including André 3000 on flute, George Clinton, BJ The Chicago Kid, and Thundercat, among others. Washington’s daughter also makes a special appearance, having written the melody for “Asha The First.” The track “The Garden Path” was performed live for the first time on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This record marks another evolution in Washington’s already expansive career, following critically acclaimed works such as The Epic and Heaven and Earth. With Fearless Movement, Washington continues to innovate, blending jazz with a rich tapestry of genres and expressions that reflect both personal growth and a broader cultural movement.
