Bar Sathorn Emerges as Asia’s Cultural Exchange Platform, Marking a New Chapter in a 136-Year Story of Global Dialogue

BANGKOK, THAILAND [27 January, 2026] - Ten years on, Bar Sarthorn stands as one of Bangkok’s most established cocktail destinations. In 2025, the bar marked its first decade with a continued rise on the regional stage, earning a place at No. 48 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025, under the leadership of Bar Manager Marco Dognini.


Rather than treating the anniversary as a moment of reflection, the bar uses it as a point of forward motion. Today, Bar Sarthorn operates as a meeting point for global ideas and local sensibilities, shaping experiences that move beyond the traditional definition of a cocktail bar.


Bar Sathorn is located within The House on Sathorn at W Bangkok, a neo-classical mansion built in 1889. Over more than a century, the building has served as a private residence, a luxury hotel, and a diplomatic embassy before becoming a contemporary cultural venue. Its history is not preserved as a fixed narrative, but lived with. Each chapter leaves its mark, allowing the space to remain relevant through use rather than nostalgia. 


A Bar That Thinks Like a Cultural Institution

This approach shapes how Bar Sathorn designs its experiences. Rather than following a conventional bar calendar, programming unfolds as a journey from past to present, using The House on Sathorn’s history as context rather than instruction. Each activation draws from the building’s layered past, then interprets it through contemporary techniques, modern flavour profiles, and refreshed takes on classics. Heritage is felt in the atmosphere, details, and the way drinks are constructed–but always with a forward looking sensibility. The result is an experience that feels rooted yet current, where history informs the moment without defining it, and guests encounter the House not as a relic, but as a living, evolving space. 


Cross Culture: Where Philosophy Becomes Practice

At the centre of this redefinition is Cross Culture, Bar Sathorn’s flagship programming series and the clearest expression of its ethos in practice.


Rather than operating within the familiar guest bartender circuit—where talent is flown in, replicated, and flown out—Cross Culture proposes a different model. Each edition is conceived as a holistic cultural chapter, exploring a place through multiple lenses. Cocktails and bartending sit alongside food, fashion, art, design, and music, forming an immersive portrait of a cultural scene rather than a single discipline.


Crucially, Cross Culture is not about importing culture, but connecting contexts. It treats collaboration as a shared act of cultural interpretation by honouring how creative identities are shaped by geography, history, and exchange. This approach is already unfolding through ongoing chapters shaped in collaboration with leading bars and creative partners from China, Chiang Mai, and South Korea, each contributing to a wider regional dialogue rather than existing as standalone events.

Leading the Charge: Marco Dognini

Leading this new chapter is Marco Dognini, Bar Manager at Bar Sathorn, whose own journey mirrors the venue’s global outlook. His career has unfolded across several cities through a journey of immersion. He began in Milan, including time at Carlo Cracco’s Michelin-starred restaurant, before moving on to Sweetwater Rooftop Bar in Perth, Heritage Awali Gold & Spa Resort in Mauritius, and later Buddha-Bar Dubai, one of the Middle East’s most recognisable nightlife destinations. 


That trajectory has shaped how he works. His cocktails are not approached through a single cultural lens but rather by place—and how flavours shift as they travel, by what happens when ingredients are reinterpreted instead of reproduced. This perspective has earned him recognition at World Class competitions in Italy and Dubai, but more importantly, it has given his work a sense of clarity. 


“Bars have always been places of exchange,” says Dognini. “What excites me about Bar Sathorn is the opportunity to explore culture in a deeper way where flavours, ideas, and people move across borders and evolve together. Cross Culture is not about showcasing one perspective, but about creating space for dialogue.”


This vision comes to life in Marco’s signature drinks. One example is the Bangkok Brunch, a clarified tomato cocktail built on pad krapow-infused tequila, Thai basil, and salted tomato water—savoury, aromatic, and quietly complex. It nods to classic brunch culture without mimicking it, using local ingredients, flavours, and modern techniques to arrive somewhere distinctly its own. Like much of the menu, it doesn’t announce its reference points but rather lets them surface, poignantly, in the glass instead. 


A Decade as a Launching Point

Ten years in, Bar Sathorn treats the milestone less as a marker of what passed and more as the point where things begin to shift. This moment signals a new era for The House on Sathron, shaped by the meeting of new voices across both bar and kitchen, and a renewed sense of dialogue between the two.


With Marco Dognini leading the bar and Chef "Bua" Sarocha Rajatanawin at Paii, the experience becomes more fluid. Ideas move back and forth. Flavours cross disciplines. What happens in glass speaks to what happens on the plate. Heritage is present, but it no longer dictates the outcome—it informs technique, inspires reinterpretation, and gives way to something current.


This is not a continuation of the past decade, but a meaningful evolution of The House on Sathorn itself. A place that has always changed now does so again—quietly deliberately—offering guests an experience that feels of the moment, shaped by global perspectives, local sensibilities, and shared creative direction that is only just beginning to take form.
